What I have done
As a junior member, you spend a lot of time learning the methodology that ShARE uses to create and share knowledge. I had to take 9 online trainings before starting my first piece of research.

I chose to do my research on Capital market in India. On the ShARE member access, I found that 3 others members of ShARE in China and Turkey were working on similar topics. I contacted them, they gave me useful insights. After 8 weeks, I finished my output and presented to the team.

As a confirmed member, the inputs of your research do not come from secondary research but mainly from interviews of experts or surveys.

I chose this topic 'XX', identified the experts I wanted to interview. I eventually spoke to 3 experts, collected their insights and compared them with what I found in the literature. I presented my research to my team and uploaded to the member access for final scoring.
I worked on a real life project with a very demanding partner, the IMF.

I had a coach, a former BCG consultant who helped me structure the case. We had only 2 month before the final presentation in Beijing. Me and my team interviewed more than 10 experts, carried out in-depth analysis before going to Beijing IMF office to present our findings.
I was the project manager of the China team for 'Social Business 2020' project. We did that study across 7 countries and we finally presented the outputs to Nobel Prize Prof Yunus in Dhaka.

We did some analysis of the current status of Social Business in China, interviewed a large number of experts, conducted a survey..

I had to manage a network entity, a group composed of 5 members of the energy network.

On top of on-line training, I had to organise practical exercises for my team.

I had to provide on-job training, help my junior members to select interesting topics of research, review their outputs.

I had to manage a group of 30 members.

As a team president, you need to recruit your team, represent your team, ensure that your members are trained, assess your member performance.

I had to manage a network of 120 members from 10 universities and 5 countries.

I had to recruit my network managers, train them. Validate the research topics of my network, review their ouptputs, promote the members.

I have been in ShARE since 2007. I worked as VP of ShARE-Tsinghua, then Portfolio Manager, Co-P Campus, Training Pole Manager at ShARE-Global, and now Board Member of ShARE.

Now I am a board member. Together with other board members, we validate the long-term strategy of ShARE and support the Presidency to execute their annual plan.

How it felt

Tough! Tough! Tough!

It just like learning a new language -after 3 month, you understand the logic bu you can barely speak.

I am learning new techniques to share knowledge but I am still frustrated . I am not yet good at it. I am eager to go to next level and practice more.

Much better now :)

I am better at using ShARE tools.

It was also so nice to confront my insights with experts. It was really thrilling.

I am also feeling like I am an expert now! :)

I can't believe how much I have learnt. A very demanding partner on one side and on the other side a very demanding coach.

I feel both tired :), grateful and very satisfied about myself and my experience in ShARE

Very enriching. The field was new to me. I had to collaborate with 7 other project managers and finally spend a few days in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I feel both tired :), grateful and very satisfied about myself and my experience in ShARE

Not easy...but a lot of pleasure in sharing.

I fell so proud when my junior members were promoted to confirmed members, and than one of them was pre selected to be a global member.

It is very enriching.

You see the impact your leadership can have. You basically shape your team, the outputs it produces

It is fascinating.

There are not many places where you can get such an exposure and an impact

ShARE is a unique!

A big family where I felt warm and excited, with a lot of things to learn.

What I have learnt

ShARE uses a very special methodology to enable us to share our knowledge insights with other members and partners.

The methodology is quite different from what you learn in the university, it is actually very similar to what top consulting companies like McKinsey or Bain use.

I had to learn how to make powerpoints slides, not those '3 bullets points' ones but rather those sophisticated ones .

I strenghtened my excel and powerpoints skills, I learned how to structure my research, better organise and convey my insights.

Thanks to the member access, I also learned a lot on Finance, which is the knowledge network I chose to join.

I have been trained on how to conduct an interview and a survey.

It is not as simple as that to conduct an interview. The expert you talk has an immense reserve of knowledge. Being able in 1 hour to get the most compelling facts is an art.

I could also strengthen the skills I have learned in the first semester and apply a number of concept you learn in ShARE.

I have learnt what 'good' really means.

At the university, we are embedded in an academic ecosytem where the pace and style if very different from the business environment where most of us will evolve.

Leaders don't have time to read a long report. You need to be very clear about your key messages, how you are going to prove them.

I feel much stronger and confident for my future career step

.

I learnt a lot about Social Business and the social sector in China.

But also I learnt how to work with people from different cultural backgrounds. In the project team, there were French, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Swiss, Portuguese members

And finally, it was the first time I could directly speak to a Nobel Prize winner.

.

This was my first managerial experience.

How do you motivate people with a salary? Hard challenge!.. and this is what I am learning now, what incentives to give which are not salary. How to ensure that members remain motivated, keep learning, and want to grow in the organisation.

ShARE organises every year in each region a leadership congress. The congress gathers all presidents of the region.

For 2 days, we get trained on ShARE guidelines, team management and we together draft the strategy of the region.

I got exposed in all aspects of a team management from finance, to recruitment, to business development. What I have learnt the more, is the difficult balance to strike between being a boss, a friend and a role model.

First I have learnt so much about energy issues across the world. We produce about 100 outputs every year, in renewable energy, power regulations, energy challenges,...

Second, I have learnt how to manage multi-cultural teams. Although we use English to communicate, the interpretation of a word can be quite different. The word "deadline" in China, India or Europe will lead to different outcomes.

I got exposed to all aspects of a team management from finance, to recruitment, to business development. What I have learnt the more, is the difficult balance to strike between being a boss, a friend and a role model.

Project management, knowledge about different industries, international communication and various cultures.

My advice
Don't join ShARE
  • if you don't have enough time
  • if you hate powerpoint
  • if you don't want to go through the whole career process

But join us :)
  • if you are very driven
  • if you are passionate about a specific sector
  • if you want to confront your ideas and insights to leaders
  • if you are very curious about global business and economic issues

Finally when you start, don't go straight onto your research, explore the member access, there is so much out there, so many members working on similar topics, so many examples of great outputs you can get inspired from.

Prepare your interview or your survey very well. Don't think it is easy to do a good interview. It is tough. There is much more beyond writing a questionnaire or survey questions.

Also speak to your network manager and president, and even practice with them before you talk to expert. Check out in the member access if other members have done something similar.

Build up relationships

A project is very demanding. Be ready for that for a new pace. Revise the training of ShARE

Organise your time well, provision some buffer. Keep the 80-20 rule in mind. Privilege quality that quantity of information.

Start by programming your interviews, they all take a lot of time to be arranged.

Thanks to what I have learnt in ShARE, I landed in McKinsey with confidence. What you learn in ShARE prepares very well for this type of career. After only 1 year, I could actually be transferred to the new york office, which is usually rare in China's office.

My advice is simple: do you training well, spend time to apply them, exchange with other students and build your network. and you will see how easy it is succeed in your future career and have a network of friends in more than 4 continents.

ShARE is an investment in time. But it pays off more than any other students club!

It is great to have a first managerial exposure. This one is tough but so important for your development

Understand your member environment, communicate, be patient and at the same time stand up, give directions. It is an arts, but this is a nice place to try.

There are 4 things manager can do to lead his team. He can role model, set up strict mechanism, communicate his strategy and provide support. Depending on your strength, try to see what dimension you want to emphasize.

But don't forget that all dimensions are important.

Virtual is good but not enough. As a knowledge president, you have to oversee about 10 network managers and 100 members

Know your member personally, talk to your network manager frequently.

ShARE belongs to those who are appetite for knowledge and fight for excellence. If you are one of them, don't hesitate to join ShARE!
